Taking the cake are three favorites that shine on the Houston Restaurant Weeks lunch and dinner menus – the tangy Lemon Curd Tart, rich Buttermilk Blackberry Cake and perfectly sweet Caramelized Banana and Nutella Crepes.
A classic Lemon Curd Tart is not an easy task to conquer, but Chef Greg Martin has come up with the perfect technique to ensure that it doesn’t overcook. The result? A bright, silky Lemon Curd with the perfect balance of tart and sweet. The curd is served in a flaky house-made pastry shell and topped with piped Italian meringue that gets torched right before service.
This lovely creation was inspired by Chef Greg’s grandmother. Although his family came from humble beginnings, Chef Greg remembers always being treated to a rich buttermilk cake when visiting his grandmother – something he considered a delicacy. Typically filled with fresh fruit, he preferred the blackberry version as the fruit was often in season and paired beautifully with the delectable pastry. Now Chef Greg’s version of her Buttermilk Cake — a moist cake filled with fresh blackberries and topped with whipped cream — has a permanent place on Bistro Menil’s menu.
Originally on the Bistro Menil menu for children, this dessert has become a favorite for diners of all ages. Chef Greg starts with house-made crepes and layers the always-delicious chocolate hazelnut spread known as Nutella with bruleed bananas. He then rolls the crepes and tops them with whipped cream. The crepe batter doesn’t include sugar, since the restaurant uses crepes for both savory and sweet dishes, so don’t worry about it being too sweet – it’s just right.
